Description
Blood Spot test to check your levels of 25-OH Vitamin D2 and D3.
Why is this important ?
Vitamin D is made by the skin out of cholesterol when the skin is exposed to sunshine. In darker skinned people (African Americans, Latinos and tanned Caucasians) it takes more sun exposure to make Vitamin D. Using sunscreen will prevent the skin from making Vitamin D.
Vitamin D is essential for good cardiovascular health and a strong immune system to fight infections and cancer. People usually get the cold and flu during the cold season when sun exposure ins minimal and in tropical regions during the rainy season. The lack of sunshine leads to a lack of Vitamin D.
The optimal level for Vitamin D is above 55, but below 100.
When you are taking Vitamin D, you should test your levels occasionally. The required dosage to reach optimal levels varies greatly from person to person. Too much Vitamin D has been associated with palpitations. Therefore it is essential that you know your Vitamin D level so you can take the optimal dosage.
